What happens after you throw away your old computer and mobile phone? Is it
possible to safely dispose and recycle these obsolete electronic products
when they have hazardous substances inside? What is their effect on human
health and the environment? Who must take responsibility for the pollution
caused by electronic waste? Why should companies take responsibility in
tackling this problem? What is the role of NGOs and other members of the
civil society in addressing this problem? Do grassroots movements have the
power to push for true corporate social responsibility?
This lecture attempts to expose the dark side of the electronics industry
and the power of local and international grassroots movements in reversing
these corporate practices. From the assembly of final products to their
ultimate disassembly and disposal, we will take you on a journey that
follows the products and witnesses their impacts on the environment and
human health. It will also demonstrate the vision, strategies, and efforts
of civil society members who attempt to overturn the destructive trend of
this industry. We hope that this lecture will inspire everyone so that
together we can build a more sustainable electronics industry.
